CHAPTER 9 "THE GRUDGE"
Calvin has a history with one particular person who he has vowed to despise until the day he passes away. When Calvin was ten years old, the first time he saw the man, he was at the boys' home where he lived, and an aristocratically dressed gentleman was there. One month after the man's visit, the residence started getting deliveries of math and science supplies, including textbooks, chemistry sets, and other related items.
Over the course of time, Calvin was able to piece together the fact that the home was compelled to accept the material in order to continue receiving financial support from the individual whom the bishop claimed was Calvin's biological father.
He had come to inquire about the youngster whose adoptive parents had been struck and killed by a train earlier in the day. The bishop presented Calvin with a certificate of adoption as well as a death certificate, claiming that Calvin's biological mother had passed away shortly after the birth of Calvin, and that Calvin's biological father was unable to care for the newborn.
This time, when the man returned, he read Calvin's file, and after doing so, he came to the conclusion that it would be best for Calvin to continue living at home. Before leaving, the man gave a sizable donation to the home to be used toward the advancement of scientific research and athletic endeavors.
Even after a significant amount of time had passed, Calvin never gave up hope that his biological father would reappear and take him back. In the meantime, he devoured all of the new scientific books and equipment that had come into his possession. After some time, he developed a strong hatred for his father, who had abandoned the family and who had disapproved of Calvin before he had even had the opportunity to meet him.
