CHAPTER 12 “CALVIN'S PARTING GIFT”
Elizabeth blames herself for Calvin's death because she insisted on the leash. Rowers and scientists fill his funeral. Elizabeth and Six-Thirty grieve alone.
In her grief, Elizabeth is approached by a reporter who misinterprets everything she says to mean that Calvin was a "jerk" and that she was just an acquaintance.
Donatti and her coworkers avoid Elizabeth the next day, unsure what to say. Calvin's lab is cleaned and his notebooks boxed when she arrives. Elizabeth finds his diamond ring in his personal crate.
Frask finds Elizabeth in the lab and tells her that, despite Elizabeth and Calvin's "unusual relationship," Elizabeth cannot legally go through Calvin's things because they are being held for any blood relatives or next of kin. She cruelly forbids Elizabeth from bringing Six-Thirty into the lab, telling her she can no longer use Calvin's influence for protection.
Frask shows Elizabeth the reporter's article about Calvin, which implies that even his girlfriend didn't know him well. Frask tells Elizabeth she may be pregnant after she throws up.
