CHAPTER 11 "Budget Cuts"

Calvin and Six-Thirty run past the police station to work. Due to budget cuts, police cars backfire as Calvin and Six-Thirty pass them, scaring Six-Thirty and reminding him of his bomb-sniffing training. Six-Thirty pulls his leash to run opposite Calvin. Calvin slips on motor oil, falls, and cracks his skull on the pavement.

A patrol car runs over him. Calvin's policemen rush to get an ambulance, but Six-Thirty knows it's hopeless. Six-Thirty goes home, "sick with sorrow", to tell Elizabeth Calvin died before the ambulance arrived.
