The CHAPTER 1 “NOVEMBER 1961"
Thirty-year-old Elizabeth Zott, living in November 1961, wakes up every morning with a sense of hopelessness. She prepares lunch for her daughter, Madeline, and writes notes that she tucks into the lunchbox. One note reads, "It is not your imagination. Most people are awful".
Madeline, who is only five years old, is reading at an advanced level. However, to fit in at school and blend in with her peers, she pretends to be illiterate. Before heading off to school each day, she carefully removes these notes from the lunch box and hides them away in a secret location. Madeline has observed her mother's struggles throughout her life, struggling to fit in anywhere, and this has inspired her desire to do the same.
Feeling depressed, Elizabeth hugs and kisses her friend Madeline one last time before heading off to the television studio to begin filming the show Supper at Six, in which she stars.
