CHAPTER 2 "PINE"
Elizabeth's background in chemistry was the foundation of her previous career. The discovery of Madeline's school lunches by Supper at Six was facilitated by Amanda Pine, a young girl who often ate them regularly. With the intention of fostering her friendship with Amanda, Elizabeth prepared Madeline's lunches with care, and they were usually hearty and scrumptious. However, Elizabeth noticed that Madeline was losing weight over time, which ultimately led her to uncover the truth. As soon as possible, Elizabeth visited the television studio where Amanda's father, Walter Pine, worked to address his daughter's theft.
Walter, taken aback by Elizabeth's beauty, presence, and exceptional cooking knowledge, suggested hosting a show that would teach the nation to cook meaningful meals.
Initially hesitant to accept the position due to her lack of culinary expertise, Elizabeth was persuaded by the increased pay and the opportunity to better support Madeline, ultimately deciding to take on the role.
The premiere episode of Supper at Six aired four weeks after its initial broadcast. Unlike other cooking show hosts, Elizabeth's program rapidly gained popularity, concluding each episode with the signature phrase: "Children, set the table." However, during the show's second year, an article referred to Elizabeth as "Luscious Lizzie," a name that stuck.
Elizabeth begins to experience feelings of awkwardness and shame as a direct result of Madeline's realization that the nickname diminishes her mother's capabilities. Whenever she has trouble sleeping, she reflects on the events of the day and how her life was altered by a person named Calvin Evans.
