CHAPTER 19 "December 1956"

Elizabeth encourages Madeline to experiment and explore while Harriet and Six-Thirty protect her. Mother and daughter love and learn together.

As promised, Dr. Mason checks on Elizabeth a year after delivery and invites her to row with the team. Dr. Mason insists that Elizabeth cannot be busy at 4:30 AM, when they row, despite Elizabeth's surprise. Harriet, eager to escape her husband's drinking and swearing, agrees to watch Madeline, surprising Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is again mistrusted by the team. She thinks she failed again, but Dr. Mason says she did fine and invites her to row with the team.
