CHAPTER 17 “HARRIET SLOANE”
Elizabeth is overwhelmed by a crying newborn, endless repetitive tasks, and lack of sleep. Dr. Boryweitz brings a gift for the baby and asks for help, which Elizabeth accepts because she needs the money but falls asleep afterward. Mrs. Harriet Sloane, Elizabeth's neighbor, awakens her from her Calvin dream.
Harriet comforts Madeline and consoles Elizabeth over Calvin. She starts to make Elizabeth a cup of coffee, but the lab stops her. Elizabeth uses the lab equipment to make the best coffee Harriet has ever had.
Harriet apologizes for not coming over earlier, assuming Elizabeth had help, and leaves her number for Elizabeth to call whenever she needs help. Elizabeth admits that she doesn't have any "blissful moments" and has wanted to give Madeline away at least twice. Harriet tells her it's normal to feel this way and that motherhood is exhausting. She advises Elizabeth to take a moment for herself every day to reconnect with herself and recommit to what she loves before she leaves.
